What is an Apostille?
An Apostille is a type of authentication that is used when documents are being transferred between countries that are a party to the Hague Apostille Convention of 1961. This international treaty helped to streamline the complex procedure for authenticating foreign documents. The purpose of an apostille or authentication is to verify the signature of the notary or other public official on a document so it can be accepted for use in a foreign country. The Secretary of State essentially verifies that the notary held a valid commission and was in good standing at the time of notarization. A single Apostille which is a certificate, is affixed to the original document. (List of Hague countries).
What is an Authentication certificate?
Authentication certificates are used for countries that are not part of the Hague Convention. Instead of a single apostille, the document needs several authentication certificates, including those from the notary commissioning agency known as a Great Seal, the U.S. Department of State, the consul of the destination country and potentially another government official in the destination country. The U.S. Department of State authenticates all Federal documents.
